Rules - Watergate
"Watergate" is an engaging two-player board game that immerses players in the historic political crisis of the 1970s. One player assumes the role of the Washington Post journalist, whose mission is to expose the scandal, while the other embodies the Nixon administration, determined to suppress evidence and maintain control. The average game duration is approximately 60 minutes. The game is deeply asymmetric, with each player having a unique deck of cards and distinct victory objectives, reflecting the struggle between investigation and cover-up.
The core of the game takes place on a central board that includes an initiative track for momentum and a grid where evidence tokens are placed. In turn, players play cards from their hand to activate specific events or use their numerical value to move the initiative token. The main actions during a game include:
- Moving the initiative token along the momentum track.
- Placing or removing evidence tokens from the research grid.
- Activating or moving informants on the grid.
- Using special card events to manipulate the board and evidence.
The Nixon administration's objective is to accumulate sufficient momentum and manage to resist until the end of the presidential term, preventing the scandal from being fully exposed. The journalist, on the other hand, wins by gathering enough evidence and managing to establish a direct connection between at least two informants and the President. The game is a constant race against time and an intense strategic battle for control of information and narrative.
