Munchkin Cthulhu is a satirical card game for 3-6 players, with a duration of approximately 90 minutes. The game parodies the Lovecraft Mythos and the horror genre, immersing players in bizarre and terrifying challenges. The main goal is to be the first player to reach Level 10, overcoming monsters and acquiring equipment.
Each player starts at Level 1 and progresses through the game by gaining levels. Cards are divided into two main types: Treasures and Doors (encounters). A player's turn typically proceeds with the following steps:
- The player "kicks down the door" by drawing a card from the Door deck.
- If the card is a monster, combat is engaged. Players use their level, weapons, and powers to defeat it.
- Other players can choose to help or hinder, for example, by adding extra monsters to the encounter.
- Defeating a monster grants Treasures and levels.
- If defeated by a monster, "bad stuff" (Bad Stuff) occurs, often involving the loss of levels or equipment.
The game introduces new Classes, including the Cultist, which partly determine the cards that can be played. Munchkin Cthulhu can be played standalone or combined with other titles in the Munchkin series for an extended and even crazier gaming experience.
