Betrayal at House on the Hill: 3rd Edition is a board game for 3-6 players in which a group of explorers ventures into an abandoned house, full of dark secrets. Initially, players cooperate by exploring the mansion's mysterious rooms, revealing new modular board tiles. During this phase, events are encountered, objects are discovered, and character statistics can vary, progressively building the adventure's narrative.
The core of the game is the Haunt phase. At a certain point, a specific event triggers the Haunt, revealing that one explorer is actually a traitor, with secret and often sinister objectives. The game transforms from cooperative to "hidden traitor," with the traitor acting against the other players, now turned "survivors." There are fifty different Haunts, each with unique rules and objectives for the traitor and the survivors, ensuring high replayability.
During their turn, players can:
- Move their character between rooms.
- Explore new rooms, resolving events (drawing Item, Omen, or Event cards).
- Interact with elements or face dangers.
