Azul
Game Description
Immerse yourself in the sumptuous atmosphere of Renaissance Portugal with Azul, the award-winning board game that will transport you to the court of King Manuel I. Inspired by the extraordinary beauty of azulejos, the iconic Moorish decorative tiles admired by the King during his visit to the Alhambra, you will be called upon to take on the role of a master tile layer. Your task? To adorn the walls of the majestic Royal Palace of Evora, transforming each wall into a masterpiece of art and design.
At the heart of the Azul gaming experience is a captivating tile-placement strategy. In turn, players select colored tiles from suppliers to place them on their personal board. The objective is to create unique patterns and decorations for the palace, optimizing every move. Subsequently, the score is calculated based on the arrangement of the tiles, with special bonuses for complete patterns and color sets, but beware: wasted supplies can penalize your progress.
Azul offers a deep and rewarding gaming experience, perfect for those who love challenge and planning. The simplicity of its rules hides remarkable tactical depth, making it accessible yet always stimulating. The player with the most points at the end of the game claims victory. Azul is a board game for 2-4 players in which you will take on the role of a tile-laying artist, tasked with beautifying the walls of the Royal Palace of Evora. The objective is to accumulate the most points by decorating the palace with the most beautiful tiles. The game takes place over multiple rounds, during which players take turns to draft colored tiles from the central suppliers and add them to their player board.
Each round is divided into two main phases:
- In the first phase, players select a group of tiles from a "factory display" (or from the center of the table) and place them on their "pattern lines" on their personal board. Excess tiles end up on the floor line, subtracting points.
- In the second phase, completed tiles from the pattern lines are moved to the palace wall, generating points. Points are scored by placing adjacent tiles, completing rows and columns, and creating specific patterns.
The game continues until a player completes a horizontal row of five tiles on their wall. At that point, the final scoring is triggered, which includes additional bonuses for completed rows and columns and for having collected all tiles of a certain color. The player with the highest total score is declared the winner.
