Patchwork
Game Description
Get your needle and thread ready for a unique gaming experience with Patchwork, the renowned two-player board game designed by Uwe Rosenberg and published by Lookout Games in 2014. In this captivating duel of wits, two players compete to create the most beautiful and point-rich patchwork quilts on their personal 9x9 boards. With an average playtime of just 30 minutes, Patchwork offers a perfect combination of accessible strategy and tactical depth, making it ideal for quick yet engaging game nights.
The core of the gameplay revolves around selecting and placing fabric tiles. At the start of the game, a circle of tiles is randomly arranged, and players use buttons, which serve as both currency and victory points, to purchase desired tiles. Each tile not only has a button cost but also requires a certain "time" to be sewn. By moving their marker on the time track, players determine not only the progression of the game but also the turn order. Whoever is further back on the track, or tied, plays again, adding a crucial strategic element to managing one's resources and time.
The true challenge of Patchwork lies in strategy and planning and space optimization. Each purchased tile must be placed on one's 9x9 board without overlapping others, aiming to fill as much of every corner as possible. Beyond purchasing, players can choose to "pass," advancing their time marker until they pass their opponent and gaining one button for each space moved. This mechanic allows players to recover currency and influence turn order. The game is enriched with additional strategic elements that contribute to the final victory points:
- Earning "income" in buttons each time one's time marker crosses a button icon on the track, based on the buttons depicted on already placed tiles.
- Bonus 1x1 tiles to be claimed first by passing specific spaces on the time track.
- A 7-point bonus for the first player to complete a 7x7 square on their board.
