Unmatched: Battle of Legends, Volume One is a board game for 2-4 players where legendary heroes face off in tactical duels lasting approximately 40 minutes. It is a highly asymmetric combat game, where each character, such as King Arthur, Alice, Medusa, or Sinbad, is represented by a unique deck of cards that evokes their style and abilities. The main objective is to defeat the opposing hero by reducing their health points to zero, through a mix of strategic moves and the peculiarities of one's own character.
The heart of the game is the combat system without luck elements, where resolution depends on the cards played. Players, in turn, perform actions to move their fighters and attack. The main game phases are:
- Draw cards and move your heroes and sidekicks on the map.
- Perform an attack action, selecting an Attack card from your deck.
- The opponent responds with a Defense card, if possible.
- Cards are revealed simultaneously and values are compared, applying the unique effects of the cards.
Combat is resolved quickly by comparing the values of the cards played, but the unique effects of each card and a deep timing system lead to interesting and strategic decisions. The game rewards experience and tactical planning, also incorporating a line-of-sight system for ranged attacks and area effects, making every encounter unique and engaging.
