The heart of the game lies in its ingenious system of tile placement and dice management. Each turn, players will use their dice to strategically select and place settlement tiles from the main board into their personal principality. Each tile, once placed, activates a unique function, contributing to the expansion and development of your realm. Your principality is divided into different regions, each requiring specific types of tiles, adding a layer of complexity and planning to your strategic development. Worker abilities will also allow you to manipulate dice results, offering greater control over your fate.
Structured into five phases, each consisting of five rounds, The Castles of Burgundy offers a variety of tactical decisions at every step. During each round, you can perform two of the four available actions: acquire settlement tiles, place them in your principality, deliver goods, or recruit workers. Every choice matters, directly influencing your path to victory. At the end of the fifth phase, victory points are calculated based on various factors, including goods delivered, unused coins and workers, and special bonuses from settlement tiles. The player with the highest score claims victory. Rules - The Castles of Burgundy
The Castles of Burgundy is a board game for 2-4 players set in medieval Burgundy, where each participant takes on the role of an aristocrat intent on developing their principality. The objective is to build settlements and mighty castles, trade along the river, exploit silver mines, and acquire knowledge from travelers. The core of the game involves taking settlement tiles from the central board and placing them on one's player board, which represents the principality. Each tile activated upon placement provides a specific benefit, and the principality is divided into different regions, each requiring a particular type of tile.
The game takes place in five phases, each consisting of five rounds. At the beginning of each phase, the common board is refilled with settlement and goods tiles. In each round, all players roll two dice, which determine the available actions. The first player of the turn also rolls a die for the arrangement of goods. During their turn, a player can perform two of the four main actions, spending the value of one of their dice for each:
- Take a settlement tile from the main board and place it in the preparation area on one's player board.
- Move a settlement tile from the preparation area and place it in the corresponding region of the principality, adjacent to an already present tile.
- Deliver goods tiles whose number matches the value of one of the dice.
- Take worker tokens, which allow modifying the dice results.
The game concludes after the fifth phase. Victory points are awarded for placed tiles, delivered goods, and specific bonuses from certain tiles. At the end of the game, victory points are also awarded for unused money and workers, and undelivered goods. The player with the most victory points wins. The rulebook includes both a basic and an advanced version for different experience levels.
